May, is a month that our family identifies with. We have a family tradition which has become part of how we have raised our children: that of reading, together, in the evening, a little page read by each of our children. In May we read from the wonderful booklet, "May the Month of Mary," written by Father Stefano Maria Manelli FFI, founder of the Order of the Franciscans of the Immaculate. Every day we read a few pages of meditation on the fundamentals of our Faith written by a lover of the Immaculate.
"The month of the beautiful Mama is finally back..." So Saint Pio of Pietrelcina once wrote at the beginning of May. That's right. For centuries now, the month of May has been the month of Mary par excellence, the month of the "beautiful Mama".
The month of Mary coincides with most beautiful month of the year for the spring splendor that covers it; for this reason it is consecrated to Her whom the Church sings and praises as Tutta Bella, Tota Pulchra, or All Beautiful. It is the month in which roses blossom fragrant in the warmth of smiling nature; for this reason it is consecrated to Her whom the Church exalts as the Mystical Rose. An enchanting month that is an expression of devotion to Mary Most Holy, who appears to us as the Queen of Spring, Spring of nature and Spring of souls.
May is also called the month of Mary's graces and glories, because in this month abundant graces are received, celebrating the glories of our universal Mother and Queen. Indeed, especially for the spiritual fruits it produces, the month of May sings the highest glories of Mary Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of all graces.
Graces of every kind are those that She gives lovingly to those who celebrate this month. Graces of spiritual progress; of renewal of life, of conversion; temporal graces for health, for work, for studies, for accommodation, for family. How many graces in this blessed month! All the more so since it closes with the sweet feast of Our Lady of Graces. Who among us does not need graces?
St. Maximilian M. Kolbe, in order to help a brother who was troubled by dangerous spiritual and material anxieties, found no more effective remedy than to recommend to him to honor the month of May and sent him useful booklets to follow the Marian month day by day.
In this time of pandemic, this month of May is an even more precious month, let us live it with love, in the family, allowing the Immaculate to take us by the hand, through prayer of the most holy Rosary, and through reading this excellent booklet.
