At Rue du Bac, the Virgin Mary came in person to reveal her identity through a small object: a Medal, intended for everyone, without distinction! Four years later, in 1858, the apparitions at Lourdes confirmed to Bernadette Soubirous the privilege of the Mother of God.
Why in France? Why did Our Lady choose to manifest herself at Rue du Bac in Paris in 1830 and then in Lourdes in 1858?
Before knowing the message and seeing what happens, it is good to try to understand why Mary decides to appear numerous times in France.
We find the answer in the history of the time.
France against Catholicism
France, from 1700 onwards, has become a sort of incubator of hatred against the Church of Rome, against the Pope, against the doctrine of the Catholic Church.
Here was born the Enlightenment, which then degenerated into philosophies against man: - Jacobinism of the French Revolution, - Marxist Communism of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc., - Nietzsche's nihilism, - Hitler's National Socialism.
The Immaculate Conception
The inscription "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you" on the medal has the value of a prophecy. On December 8, 1854 Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, recognizing that Mary, by a singular grace, had obtained the privilege, in view of being an instrument of the Incarnation of God, to be without sin since her conception. By virtue of her immaculacy, Mary is called to take a leading role in the fight against the devil.
An inscription that will resonate even more loudly in 1858 when Mary presents herself with the title of Immaculate Conception in Lourdes.
Mary in her apparitions is standing. At Rue du Bac she stands on a hemisphere. The Virgin has her arms outstretched and rays come out of her hands. By bestowing the graces she obtains from God, Our Lady overcomes the Devil.
The purpose of these four apparitions seems to be to prepare the minds of the faithful all over the world for the forthcoming definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and to restore Christianity to France and all the other nations of the earth.
The Apparitions of Rue du Bac
According to Jean Guitton, a French intellectual, in his study on the Miraculous Medal he came to define the apparitions of Rue du Bac as the official beginning of Marian apparitions in the World. Mary's apparitions were intended to warn the whole of humanity of what was looming over them: wars, armed conflicts, family hatreds and grudges, massacres, homicides, family crises, abortion and euthanasia are tangible signs of the working presence of the devil.
The apparitions of Rue du Bac thus anticipate the attack of evil by Mary, Our Lady. She who crushes the head of the Serpent. Our Lady appears, therefore, in Paris to exhort humanity to return to God. Mary invites us to abandon ourselves to God's will, to let ourselves be overwhelmed by His love.
To convey her message, the Virgin Mary uses a simple and humble person. A girl named Zoe Labouré, who would later become Sister Catherine. Her motherless child found in Mary that maternal warmth that had been taken away from her. Having overcome her father's resistance, she decided to enter the order of the Daughters of Charity. Here she took the name Sister Catherine. The period she spent in the convent of Rue du Bac was rich in heavenly graces. On June 6, 1830, Jesus appeared to her during Mass as a crucified King, devoid of all adornment. In that year of novitiate, Mary will manifest herself to her. Apparitions that would lead to the coining of the Miraculous Medal.
